Stone throwing incident on Eastern
Boulevard 6/27/2006 10:57:52 AM A couple has narrowly
escaped serious injury after their car was stoned on Eastern
Boulevard near Woodstock.
The incident which happened
yesterday, comes just days after 48-year-old Nolan Daniels was
killed when a by a brick was thrown through his car window
along the R300.
The police responded quickly to his
call.
The family of a motorists who was killed in a
stoning incident on the R 300 says they're still in
shock.
Forty-eight-year-old Nolan Daniels suffered
severe head injuries when a brick was hurled through his car
window on Friday.
He later died in hospital.
The
Western Cape Community Safety Department has called an urgent
meeting today to discuss the stonings on the
N2.
Daniel's son Juandre says there isn't much the
police can do to track down stone throwers.
He says he
thinks the purpose of the attack was a robbery. Back to

Missing hiker's body found
6/27/2006 10:54:41 AM Rescuers have found the body of a
missing teenager near Porterville in the Western
Cape.
Fourtee- year-old Guido Keyster had been missing
since last week after going on a hike with two of his
friends.
Keyster's body was found above the Groot
Waterval ravine yesterday afternoon.
Rescuers say
Keyster's 13-year-old friend Eldino Patience broke both his
ankles during a fall, but managed to crawl his way to a nearby
farm last Friday where he alerted authorities.
Rescuer
Neville van Rensburg, said the cause of Guido Keyster's death

Farm evictions in Jonkershoek to be
investigated 6/27/2006 10:46:50 AM Western Cape
Agriculture MEC Cobus Dowry says an audit will be conducted in
the Jonkershoek area to determine the impact of farm
evictions.
Roleplayers in the farming community met
yesterday to discuss land issues in the area.
Earlier
this year, local farm workers threatened land invasions and
bloodshed if farm evictions continued.
However an
agreement was hammered out and a temporary moratorium placed
on evictions.
Dowry says they are looking into the
matter.
The organisation, women on farms say positive
progress is being made on stopping farm evictions in the

Disciplinary action against rugby
club 6/27/2006 10:38:48 AM Disciplinary action has been
taken against a rugby club after its players were involved in
a brawl that led to the death of an opposing team
member.
Twenty-four-year-old Riaan Loots died at the
weekend after he was severely injured in a club
match.
It is alleged that players from the Delicious A
team repeatedly punched and kicked Loots, a flyhalf for
Rawsonville.
Boland Rugby's Anthony Hess, says the club
has been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation
into the incident.
Hess says a senior advocate is

Israel rejects Palestinian demands
6/27/2006 9:58:52 AM Israel has rejected a demand by
Palestinian militants to release Palestinian women and youths
from its prisons in exchange for information about Corporal
Gilad Shalit.
The 19-year-old was abducted during a
daring operation on Sunday.
He was captured by
militants who'd dug a tunnel from a house close to the Israeli
Gaza border, under the security fence ending close to a
military post on the Israeli side of the divide.

Amnesty Int asked to look for Khalid
Rashid 6/27/2006 9:50:50 AM Amnesty International has
been asked to help in the search for missing Pakistani Khalid
Rashid.
Earlier this month Rashid’s lawyer Zehir Omar
also requested the international court in The Hague to
investigate the Pakistani man’s disappearance.
Rashid
was flown from Waterkloof Air Force Base last year in a plane
that has been linked to 'extraordinary renditions'.

Ex-husband of Gugulethu murder victim
speaks out 6/27/2006 9:45:22 AM The former husband of
one of the victims of last week's triple murder in Gugulethu
has spoken out.
Felix Furtak, who was married to
Petronella Mkona says the murders could have been prevented if
people were more open to helping
others.
Thirty-one-year-old Petronella, her two-year
old daughter Latoya and her 38-year old sister Charmaine were
shot dead last Wednesday.
Mkona's boyfriend has been
charged with the murders.
Now Felix Furtak says he's
afraid for his life, because he has spoken out about the
abusive relationship between his ex-wife and her

Doubt whether cops are equipped

whether police have the necessary equipment to fight heavily
armed criminals.
It comes in the wake of bloody gun
battle in Jeppestown in Johannesburg on Sunday.
Four
policemen were gunned down in the massive shootout with a gang
of robbers, some armed with AK 47's.

SAA hijacker: He will remain behind
bars 6/27/2006 9:40:30 AM The 21-year-old student
charged with attempting to hijack a SAA plane will remain
behind bars until his bail application in early
July.
Tinashe Rioga is being held at the Bellville
South Police Station.
He appeared in the Bellville
Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Rioga was arrested after
allegedly trying to hijack a SAA plane more than a week ago.

Companies told not to victimise
guards 6/27/2006 9:09:17 AM Trade union federation,
Cosatu has warned security companies not to victimise striking
employees returning to work.
Security union Satawu last
week signed a wage deal with employers, effectively ending a
three month long strike.
Thousands of workers returned
to their jobs yesterday.
Cosatu says it has since
received reports of bosses punishing workers for being on
strike.
Transport union Satawu says it will approach
the commission for Concilliation, Mediation and Arbitration
(CCMA) after some striking security guards were not allowed

High illiteracy rate in SA
6/27/2006 9:03:03 AM An Education Department report has
found four point seven million adult South Africans are
illiterate.
Education Minister Naledi Pandor had
instructed a ministerial committee to investigate the
country's huge illiteracy problem.
The committee
presented its report last week providing a plan on how to best
confront the issue.
The department's Tommy Makhode
says, the minister's optimistic the scheme will be

Koeberg maintenance running
smoothly 6/27/2006 8:42:48 AM Eskom says refuelling and
maintenance of Koeberg's unit 2 is running
smoothly.
Currently only Koeberg's unit 1 is
operational after unit 2 was shut down last month.
Unit
2 is scheduled to be at full capacity by the last week of
July.
Eskom's Tony Stott says residents have heeded the
call to use electricity more sparingly and that load shedding
will not be necessary for the next few weeks.

Families of dead NW teachers are
traumatised 6/27/2006 8:40:52 AM The North West
Education Department says, the families of the fourteen
teachers who were killed in a road accident over the weekend
are still traumatised. The group from Diphetogo Primary
School died when their mini-bus taxi, travelling from Mafikeng
to Gauteng collided with a truck near Lichtenburg. They
were en-route to Pretoria to attend the funeral of their
deputy principal's mother. Yesterday the department,
together with the North West Premier Edna Molewa and members
from various provincial departments visited the bereaved
families. The provincial education department's Charles
Raseala says, the families are going through hard
times. Raseala says they also visited the surviving

Blackheath cash heist suspects still
on the run 6/27/2006 8:37:14 AM Cape Town Police are
searching for a gang of armed robbers following a cash heist
in Blackheath.
Twelve men travelling in three cars
ambushed a Transcash cash van in Range Road
yesterday.
The robbers made off with an undisclosed
amount of money in five cash boxes.
It's believed the
men used a luxury German sedan to ram the cash van off the
road.
The police's Billy Jones says a policeman and a

Cape Town tourism is on increase in
winter 6/27/2006 8:34:54 AM Cape Town Tourism says it's
winning the battle against seasonality.
Traditionally
tourism flocked to the Mother City for its warm summer days,
while avoiding the city during winter.
But the city's
tourism officials say this is changing.
Cape Town
Tourism says tourism to the Mother City is growing at a steady
rate.
Officials say mid-year school holidays were
traditionally characterised by low visitor numbers in Cape
Town, compared to other periods.
They attributed this
primarily to the province's cold and wet winter.
But
tourism's Mariette du Toit says this is no longer the
case.

hit by another petrol price increase next month.
This
may however not be as steep as the increases in May and
June.
So says an independent economist Noelani
King-Conradie.

counselling centre says tik and heroin are still the most
popular drugs used in the Western Cape.
On world
anti-drug day yesterday, an awareness march was held in
Manenberg.
Here youth were shown real life examples of
various kinds of addiction.
A Cape Town drug
counsellor says the use of tik in the Western Cape is still on
the increase.
Grant Jardine was speaking during world
anti-drug day yesterday.
The day was marked by an
anti-drug march by residents of Manenberg.
Jardine
says more and more young people are becoming hooked.

Sri Lanka re-introduces stringent

cracking down after a suicide bomber killed one of the
countries top military officers.
It has re-introduced
all the security measures, which had been suspended under the
2002 ceasefire.
This has also rocked the fragile truce
between the Sri Lankan Government and the Tamil

Gugulethu murder suspect to appear in
court today 6/27/2006 8:24:31 AM The man arrested in
connection with a triple murder at Gugulethu will appear in
the Athlone Magistrate's Court
today.
Thirty-five-year-old David Paulo faces charges
of murdering his 31-year old girlfriend Petronella Mkona, and
her two-year old daughter Latoya.
He also stands
accused of shooting dead Petronella's 38-year old sister

Gauteng shoot-out men linked to other
crime 6/27/2006 8:23:25 AM Gauteng Police says, they're
investigating the possibility that the suspects arrested
following Sunday's bloody gun battle in which four policemen
were killed are linked to another massive shootout in which a
police reservist was gunned down. Eleven men were arrested
after a tense stand off with police in Jeppestown on
Sunday. Officers tracked the gang to their hideout in the
area after they allegedly robbed a Pick 'n Pay in Honeydew
