Cape Talk Gugulethu murders: Police rebuff protection comments 6/29/2006 1:31:03 PM
Western Cape Police have denied that they failed to protect a Gugulethu woman who was subsequently murdered allegedly by her abusive boyfriend. Thirty-one-year old Petronella Mkona, her two-year old daughter Latoya and her 38-year old sister, Charmaine, were shot dead in their family home in Gugulethu last week. Mkona's boyfriend, David Paulo (Landrino) has been charged with the triple murder.
Media reports earlier suggested that Mkona had laid a charge against her abusive boyfriend in 2004, but police neglected to protect her.

Police say an internal investigation showed they had not failed to protect a Gugulethu woman whose boyfriend is now charged with her murder. Mkona's boyfriend, David Paulo (Landrino) appeared in court last Friday and was denied bail.
It has emerged that Petronella Mkona had laid a complaint of domestic violence and assault against him two years ago.
Mkona, her daughter Latoya and her older sister Charmaine were killed in their Gugulethu home last week.
Paulo was arrested shortly afterwards.

Police say the Gugulethu triple murder accused was wanted by them for an array of other criminal charges.
David Paulo appeared briefly in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court yesterday in connection with last week's murders of his girlfriend Petronella Mkona, her two-year old daughter Latoya and her 38-year old sister Charmaine. All three were shot dead in their Gugulethu home during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Paulo's case has been postponed till the 16th of August.

The suspect in the Gugulethu triple murder has not applied for bail during his brief appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court.
Thirty-five-year old David Paulo has now been formally charged with murdering his pregnant girlfriend, Petronella Mkona, her two-year daughter Latoya and her older sister. Police arrested Paulo shortly after he shot the women and girl after an argument with Petronella Mkona last week.

The former husband of one of the victims of last week's triple murder in Gugulethu has spoken out.

Felix Furtak, who was married to Petronella Mkona says the murders could have been prevented if people were more open to helping others.

Thirty-one-year-old Petronella, her two-year old daughter Latoya and her 38-year old sister Charmaine were shot dead last Wednesday.

Mkona's boyfriend has been charged with the murders.

Now Felix Furtak says he's afraid for his life, because he has spoken out about the abusive relationship between his ex-wife and her boyfriend.

Its emerged that yesterdays triple murder in Gugulethu was sparked by a mother protecting her unborn child.
The killings have left a 12-year-old boy ( Thando Shamile Mkona) without a family after his pregnant mother ( Petronella (Pat) Mkona ), three-year-old sister and aunt were "executed".
Police spokesperson Billy Jones says all three died from single bullet wounds to the head.
A 35-year-old man ( Landrino) from the Democratic Republic of Congo has been arrested.
He is the boyfriend of the dead woman - Petronella Mkona, who was six months pregnant with his second child.
Apparently he wanted her to have a mid term abortion - which she refused.
Mkona's sister Lindiwe has pleaded with the justice system not to give the alleged killer bail.
